Introduction to Cable Filler Materials

The Filler Materials for cables are mainly used to fill the gaps of cables, increase the density and center of gravity of cables, and thus improve the mechanical strength, insulation performance, heat resistance, cold resistance and aging resistance of cables. Here are some common cable filling materials:
1、 Polyethylene (PE)

● Characteristics: Polyethylene is a polymer material with good wettability, heat resistance, mechanical strength, and toughness, but relatively poor cold resistance.
● Application: Due to its excellent insulation performance, oxidation resistance, and weather resistance, polyethylene is often used as a filling material for cables to maintain the integrity and stability of the internal structure of the cable.
2、 Polypropylene (PP)

● Characteristics: Polypropylene material has excellent cold resistance, toughness and aging resistance.
● Application: Polypropylene is an ideal filling material for cables that require good cold resistance.
3、 Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Cable Wrapping Tape

● Characteristics: PVC material has good insulation performance and corrosion resistance.
● Application: Although PVC cable wrapping tape is more commonly used for insulation protection of cables, it can also be used as a filling material in some cable structures to enhance the insulation performance of cables.
4、 Flame retardant filling material

● Characteristics: Flame retardant fillers usually use nitrogen-containing or phosphorus containing compounds, which consume oxygen through chemical reactions to achieve flame retardant effects.
● Application: In order to improve the flame retardant performance of cables and prevent rapid spread of cables in fires, flame retardant fillers are widely used in wire and cable systems. These fillers are usually wrapped in the interlayer between the wire and the insulation layer to reduce the oxygen content and heat transfer rate of the internal voids.
5、 Other materials

● Mica tape and aluminum foil tape: used for insulation and shielding of cables, although not directly used as filling materials, they play an important role in cable structures.
● Non woven fabric and polyester fiber: These materials are also commonly used for insulation protection of cables and sometimes as part of filling materials.
● Hemp rope and cotton thread: environmentally friendly, durable, with softness and cushioning properties, can be used as filling materials in some cables.
● Aramid fiber (such as Kevlar): It has ultra-high strength, modulus, and heat resistance. Although not commonly used as a filling material, it may have applications in special cables.
Fiberglass fiber: It has excellent insulation and mechanical strength, and may also be used as a filling material in specific cables.
● Summary
There are various types of filling materials for cables, each with its unique characteristics and application scenarios. When selecting filling materials, it is necessary to choose according to the specific usage environment and requirements of the cable to ensure the stability and reliability of the cable during long-term use. Meanwhile, with the advancement of technology and innovation in materials, the types and properties of filling materials for cables in the future will continue to be enriched and improved.
